Uniview OwlView Bullet Camera: 4MP vs 8MP Buying Guide

Every installer hears the same question: “Should we go 4K?” Many clients believe more megapixels always means better footage. However, the right choice depends on the site, the distances and the budget.

In this article, we compare the two versions of the Uniview OwlView Bullet Camera. First, we look at the 4MP model. Then, we weigh it against the 8MP 4K model. Finally, we show when the lower-cost option gives your client better value.

Uniview OwlView Bullet Camera: Two Models, One Sensor

Both versions share the same core hardware. Each uses a 1/1.8″ CMOS sensor, an F1.0 lens and Wise-ISP image processing. As a result, both deliver full-colour images in very low light.

Where the 4K Uniview OwlView Bullet Camera Wins

The 8MP model packs about 43% more pixels across the frame. So, with the same 2.8 mm lens, it holds useful detail further away. That matters when you need to identify a face across a large yard.

In addition, 4K footage lets investigators zoom in during playback. They can crop into a recording and still see clear detail.

For this reason, the 4K version suits these sites:

Wide entrances and gates where one camera covers a large area

Parking areas at shopping centres and office parks

Schools and government sites where evidence quality matters most

Is the 4MP Uniview OwlView Bullet Camera Enough?

For most sites, the answer is yes. A 4MP camera gives clear identification at the distances of a shop floor, driveway or farm gate. The 4MP Uniview OwlView Bullet Camera records at 25fps. This smoother motion helps you capture moving vehicles and people who run.

Low light also plays a part. Both models use the same sensor size. However, the 4MP model divides it into fewer, larger pixels. Larger pixels generally collect more light, which can help in the darkest scenes.

The 4MP model makes sense for:

estate perimeters and guardhouses

farm gates, sheds, workshops and kraals

retail shops and stockrooms

any project where cost per camera drives the budget

CCTV Storage Requirements: The Hidden Cost of 4K

Higher resolution raises the bitrate, and bitrate drives storage. As a rough guide, an 8MP camera needs about twice the storage of a 4MP camera. Of course, real figures depend on scene activity, compression and recording mode.

Here is a typical estimate for continuous recording with H.265 compression:

4MP at about 3 Mbps uses roughly 1 TB per camera over 30 days

8MP at about 6 Mbps uses roughly 2 TB per camera over 30 days

So, picture an eight-camera farm system that keeps 30 days of footage. It could need 8 TB with 4MP, or 16 TB with 8MP. That gap means extra hard drives and possibly a larger NVR.

Bandwidth doubles as well. This matters on farms that link buildings with wireless bridges. Fortunately, event-based recording cuts these figures a great deal.

Uniview OwlView Bullet Camera vs OwlView Plus

Both models in this guide belong to the standard OwlView range. However, some sites need 4K and the best possible night detail. For those jobs, consider OwlView Plus. It uses a larger 1/1.2″ sensor, so it gathers far more light.

Read our OwlView Plus guide to see where it fits. For most estates, shops and farms, though, the standard range offers the right balance.

Mix 4MP and 8MP for the Best Value

You do not need one resolution for a whole site. Many installers fit 8MP cameras at gates and entrances. There, identification matters most. Then, they use 4MP cameras along fences, in stores and around buildings.

This approach keeps storage and cost down. At the same time, it still captures key evidence in 4K. It works especially well on farms. After all, main gates need detail, while long perimeters need coverage.
